Experience of my latest Alipore Zoo visit on January 2023
I visited Alipore Zoo on 16th January 2023. It was a monday and the midst of ongoing Ganga Sagar mela. I was searching on the the internet if online ticket booking is possible or not.So, yes it is but I physically booked ticket from the counter.
If you buy ticket online, you will need to pay GST extra on the ticket. Adult (children >5 years) ticket price is INR 50/ person and children <5 years age is INR 20. Online ticket is avaiable on https://kolkatazoo.in and https://eticketaliporezoo.com/.
Since, online ticketing was not advertised by government so much, i was sceptical about fraud websites. Anyways when I reached the ticket counter I was asked if I had online ticket which confirmed that the e-ticket facility was genuine and you can avoid the hassle of standing in a queue.
Due to Ganga sagar Mela possibly they had removed the parking facility from and around the immediate Zoo location and parking anywhere around is INR 200 irrespective of time you are parked there. Post entering the zoo, I also found that there are maps with pictures of animals with distance from the cage as well as large guide maps pointing at where you are on the zoo at that point. This made it easier to navigate however the maps are in English and hardly helpful for the crowd.
There are toilets and drinking water facilities at different spots. our family used both the mens and womens toilet and found them to be spacious and clean to our surprise. Earlier when I visited this zoo there was distinct smell of wild animals from and around the cages which I didnt get this time.
I found the enclosures had been made open and large and I was able to see both Royal bengal tiger and leopard from very close range. Earlier I would generally see them lying doing or would not see them at all. there were zoo staff around different encolsures with walkie talkies observing people.
I also saw that there was general absence of middle class bengali crowd from the overall visitors base. I dont try to be biased or something but I found 100% crowd to be rural or from tier 2-3 cities. 80% crowd was from minority/ peaceful community, remaining 15% from non-bengali speaking crowd from majority community possibly Ganga Sagar visitors on their way home. This surprised us a lot. It was crowded as usual and facilities were fine but if you want to relax, this might not be the place.
