Review of Linux Mint for first time Indian users who are planning to shift from windows

Congratulations! for even gathering courage to move beyond your comfort zone where you have been existing with your buggy microsoft windows OS (all versions and all editions included).

You have made the very right choice of your life and taken the first step to move into a legitimate OS with stability and virus and malware  free environment. I am assuming you are not a gamer.

I assume you are programmer or a day to day computer user who have been stuck with your windows OS for more than long enough time. Do a Google search and you will get to the official mint OS website. Go  to its download page and you will get the option of downloading the iso file via torrent or directly.

I would suggest downloading it via torrent. Dont worry you will not be executed by Indian authorities for downloading free material through torrent. Downloading via will give you stability in your download and option to choose time of starting and stopping your download.

The iso file is about 1.5 GB. Write it to a DVD after downloading. Initially, I suggest creating a dual boot with your existing windows OS. If you have a desktop and a laptop, suggesting you to create a dual boot on your desktop and keep mint only on your laptop.

Installing will not take more than 45-50 minutes which will include - OS installation, office package installation, driver installation (no motherboard driver CD or your graphics card driver CD is required),web browser.

For those installing it in their laptops, be relieved your wifi drivier is installed and connecting it with your home router is like butter. I suggest keep your laptop connected via LAN to your router. It will automatically get connected to your internet.

If you have a MAC filter set on your router, be advised to configure it first. You can find you MAC address by typing - ifconfig on your terminal(command prompt for linux).

I wanted you to keep your machine connected to your internet because it will take updates, In case you have webcam, scanner, printer, graphics card. It will find drivers in its online repository and ask you for an option to install.

It is very quick to boot, reboot and shutdown compared to windows as well as less resource hungry compared to windows. The interface is same as windows 7. The difference that you will notice is due to the intensity and high quality of colour that you never saw while using windows OS. Another difference will be the icons and their names in mint OS. For example libre office is the linux version of microsoft office package. The keyboard functionalities are same as in windows like for instance - windows button opens just what it does with a windows OS.

For most of your additional softwares like pdf reader, web cam software, scanner software you just need to go to software manager already installed in your system. However, OS updates will be visible from the shield icon on the right hand corner of your desktop where you see date and time.

As the OS is free there are different levels of OS updates indicated by 1 to 5. 1 to 3 levels are those updates which has been approved and checked by the mint development community. 4 and 5th level of updates are not for novice users. As long as your system is up to date, you will see a tick mark inside your shield icon and the moment there is a new update it will show a blue 'i' inside the shield icon.

All browser add-ons will be compatible with your mozilla firefox browser which came with your installation by default.Skype is also available for your mint OS.

Happy mint-ing with your new mint OS. I will rank it-
Ease of use - 9/10
Stability -10/10
Look and feel -10/10
