A Broken dream: Military Commander Hitler

Born in 20th April,1889 in Brunau am In(Austria), a boy was destined to change the course of history of Europe and of the world.His name is Adolf Hitler. As a youth he spend some down and out years in Austria before he entered Germany to try his luck as a migrant. Being born and brought up in a strong Patriarchial society and always treated harshly by his father. Several analysts thinks that he transferred his personal hatred in family life.

Hence, many analysts think that this was the reason why it wasn't possible for him to realistically assess Russia's strength, after coming to power in Germany. Several recent studies claim that in order to stem his helplessness in the face of fear,in the face of danger .He followed a ruthless aggressive policy.According to Norman Dixon in his book:-"On the Psychology of Military Incompetence  pointed out that bad commanders display traits like-failure to think properly under stress, nervousness,rigidity etc.

Poise and Langer in their book-"Command failure in war:Psychology and Leadership" tried to explain Hitler's behaviour in terms of frustration and aggression cycle. Then his involvement in Yugoslavia and Greece delayed hos venture in USSR.Moreover, Hitler was eagerly waiting for the incorporation of Tiger Tanks to be used against the USSR. The severe cold and outnumbered Russian soldiers hammered the final nail in the coffin of Operation Unternehmen Barbarosa. The failure can be partially attributed to the subordination of the German war machine to Hitler's office.

Although before the world war-2 Hitler took steps to create a force structure to implement his aggressive military design. In the inter world war period there were 2 lobbies in Germany jostled for supremacy. General Ludwig Beg led the larger group which preached infantry-artillery orientation of future German army.However a smaller group led by officers like Erich Manstein and Heinz Guderian advocated that Panzers and dive bombers would be the new war winners. And Hitler backed the right horse which is proved in the personal diary entry of General Halder,Chief of Staff (23rd June 1941).He writes:"The offensive of our forces caught the enemy with tactical surprise.Evidence of complete unexpectedness for the enemy of our attack is the fact that units were captured quite unaware in their barracks,aircraft stood on the airdromes secured by tarpaulins and forward units,attacked by our troops,asked their commanders what they should do.........".

He is credited for being the first German civilian ruler to establish supremacy over Prussian Generalitat. He was convinced that Germany lost World War-I because the Germans lost their nerve. In order to install lost confidence among the masses ,he organized Nuremberg Rallies,built Berlin's Olympic Stadium and a monsterous hotel which the world never saw.

This hotel which still stands today stretching 3 miles on one of Germany's best sea beaches.Although a crumbling concrete complex was designed to provide holidays to 20000 people simultaneously. This was in accordance to the Nazi policy of "Kraft durch Freude". the building has earned a local name of Colossus of Prora. This forbidding mass of 10,000 rooms each of which faced the sea furnished with beds, sofa with centrally heated rooms (an unusual luxury at that time), won an award in 1937 Paris World Exhibition for the idea of a mass tourist resort.

Instead of accommodating holiday makers Prora become a temporary school for Nazi police and home to civilians who have lost their homes during allied bombings at the later part of world war-II.

However, Joachim Fest in his book "Inside Hitler's bunker: the last days of third Reich  writes that Hitler remained in total command till the end. None of the senior generals dared to challenge their Fuhrer as he moved non-existent divisions along the map table. As allied armies moved into Germany, Hitler threatened to turn Berlin into Stalingrad. Western Power's took Hitler's threat seriously and left it to the Russians to capture the lair of the fascist beast and the dream of the world empire shattered.
