A Bengali's Review of Marathi Movie Jeevan Sandhya

 Hello Readers!

I have watched this movie only last week sunday. I liked the trailer very much. I dont know marathi so I was watching it with english subtitles. I also want to make a declaration in the very beginning that I have watched movies of 22 nations due to which the plot most often than not becomes "somewhat" obvious which was also is the case for this movie and also the cause of my liking for this movie.

The movie opens with a scene where the senior citizen hero emerges out of a car and enters a law firm. He is followed by his wife. Their conversation confuses and sparks the curiosity of the law office receptionist who enquires about their reason for arrival to the law firm. Now the 1st part of the movie starts with the narration by the hero - Jivan abhyankar how he met his new wife after his 1st wife's death and the relaitionship developed into a love marriage. It also showed how negatively the son's and daughters of this aged couple reacted when they heard about this from their office colleagues (in case of jivan bhyankar) and from son in law (in case of sandhya joshi).

The film is very true in reflecting how the general public including the so called modern generation views a love relationship developing between 2 senior citizens. The love shown here is more in the sense of emotional  support and companionship rather than the sexual angle of love as portrayed in commercial mainstream bollywood movies.

This movie also truely reflects how indifferent own children become to the emotional needs for love and companionship when one of the partners die. Jivan Abhyankar without much drama, in a very matured way expresses his love and also says that he is saying this for the first time in his life because his previous marriage was arranged marriage. However, for sandhya joshi the momemnt of truth dawned to her when she understood how indifferent her daughter and her son-in-law was to her emotional needs. Inspite of the fact that she was alone and her daughter was in a different city.

Now Jivan abhyankar tells the law clerk that they are here for mutual divorce forced upon them by their own children. When Jivan Abhyankar had stroke, his son approved to help only when Sandhya joshi promised she will divorce and move out from his fathers life. As she wasnt earning and no support from son-in-law and daughter. She had to comply.

However, post divorce Jivan Abhyankar had another stroke and left paralysed for the remainder of his life. During this  time the need for a full time nurse became evident and Sandhya Joshi using her maiden name came and joined as a nurse. Sandhya Joshi holds the family of jivan bhyankar like a mother in the mask of a senior nurse. The daughter in law who supported jivan abhyankar understood and identified the new nurse to be her motherin law.

At the time of death of jivan abhyankar, his son also realizes that the nurse is his step mother and welcomes her with open arms and the film ends there. There is much more to it than I wrote about this movie. Please watch this family drama.
