Activating OPENDNS on your DDWRT Router succesfully
Hello Reader,
I am back again with some interesting stuff. I have started using DDWRT for quite sometimes and i had ever since been working on centrally adblocking all devices connected to my home network and filtering at the gateway level.
I stumbled upon DDWRT by chance and I have been using it and its tweakable setup and gives you real sense of freedom compared to using company provided firmware. If you havent used it, go ahead.
I was looking for a free option to centrally filter my incoming and outgoing data. So, I stumbled upon OPENDNS(currently owned by CISCO). Anticipating you have moderate understanding about how to setup a router and DDNS, I will not go into those details.
For the past few months I found that no matter how much i tried and surfed the net I came across no, option which would correct my DDNS setup so that I dont receive Error code 1 from OPENDNS. I came across that 1 single entry in possibly the entire internet where a solution was given in somewhat broken fashion.
I will put all those points in a step by step manner for OPENDNS Configuration:-
1) you have configured your routers DNS1 and DNS2 under setup tab in your DDWRT to:-
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
2) You have configured your DDNS tab with
DDNS Service=custom
(Assuming you dont have OPENDNS in the drop down list, as I dont have it)
DYNDNS Server= updates.dnsomatic.com
User Name-Your open DNS user name(your email address)
Password-Your open DNS Login password
Hostname-Name you have given to the network inside the OPENDNS Website after you logged in
URL-http://updates.dnsomatic.com/nic/update?hostname=
Use External IP Check=No
3) Click Apply and Click Save
4) Go to website - dnsomatic.com(this website is owned by CISCO too, so login and password will be same as your OPENDNS Website password)
5) Click Add a service
6) Select OPENDNS and follow successive steps and activate your OPENDNs Network name inside DNS-O-Matic too
7) Check too see whether you see green thumbs up sign under Active section beside service and status column
8) Logout and you are done
9) Reboot your router
You will see something like below in your DDNS status section under DDNS Tab of your router:-
Thu Jan 1 05:30:11 1970: INADYN: Started 'INADYN Advanced version 1.96-ADV' - dynamic DNS updater.
Thu Jan 1 05:30:11 1970: INADYN: IP read from cache file is 'XX.XX.XX.XX'. No update required.
